People are thinking through portrait photography as a traditional art form. An artist who currently showcases his portraits at the Pittsburgh gallery says his work is motivated by a reaction to the character of portraiture being traditionally confrontational. Thanks to the glip approach of simply telling the individual to smile and hold it as his picture was being taken, this photographer became unsatisfied with what he was doing.
He has a point here. Media portraiture can be quite bland even if it has a large following as well as a perception of being cool. Based on the photographer's orders, the models in the picture do different gestural poses in unforeseen settings.
Involving the sitter in a greater way in the shoot is his solution for breaking the routine in this type of work. To create the 13 portraits of people from Pittsburgh, collaborative work was done. The sitter is given freedom in choosing the setting as well as in giving other suggestions. This is deviant from what is often practiced in the profession.
When he does a project, he has no preconceived plan. A preliminary meeting is needed to work out the general concept of the photograph. Then, he looks for the perfect setting with the help of the sitter. Sometimes a set is built, as in the portrait of another photographer, where a sheet steel and mirrored glass box creates a confined cell like architecture for the portrait.
One sculptor chose to be photographed with his own work, and a writer chose the scenario of the bar. The use of bridges in one particular shot was suggested, but it didn't produce a desired effect and actually came out weak compared to the sitter and his costume.
The photographs demonstrate his amazing skill in creating lighting effects that are not at all simple. These were not done during the developing and printing of the pictures. Using colored gels and lighting equipment, he is able to create a beautiful array of colorful effects. The length of time it would take for the exposure for these photographs is tedious. The 15 minutes for portrait exposure gives sufficient time for the sitter to walk into the camera's range and also out of it.
He could come back with a wand of light in his hand and use it to trace letters in the air. When people left and entered the bar during the exposure, there was the no evidence found on the film of their presence. Photographs that were taken in the garden of a factory indicate that what a picture usually needs is just simple and sensible lighting to work.
He is very professional about what he does, and what's surprising is he just taught himself photography. Because he can be assertive with what he wants done, collaboration is usually a challenge. The artist's final decisions are what reign in the end. On show are reversal prints that have been printed professionally.
