The "art of oratory": has it played a significant role in modern day politics?
In the recent national elections or any since the advent of radio and TV, what's the significance if any in your opinion, has the art of oratory played?
Obama's mastery of it I feel is a major reason for his achieving the Whitehouse. Do any of the institutions of higher learning such as Harvard from which he graduated, still offer courses in this skill? Or is it just referred to as "public speaking" nowadays?
Of all the politicians of say beginning with FDR up to and including the present, which do you think were competent, perhaps even Great orators; and their expertise in this art played a large part in their becoming successful?
There is an expectation that people at the level of Obama possess eloquent speaking skills, GW Bush was an exception and made the audience wonder how the guy ever got into the room.
Regarding Obamas speaking style, you’ll notice he splits his sentences in half, with a crescnedo the middle and resuming that crescendo then tapering the tone into the end of the sentence.
This method is also commonly practiced by preachers especially baptist ministers since the pregnant pause lets the speaker increase the emphasis of their stated points.
GW Bush split his sentences into three parts with little variance in tone or volume and this often portrays the speaker as less intelligent and childish. The second pause also portrays the speaker as duplicitous / dishonest since it seems as if the person is thinking of their statement and making it up as they go along.
People who are percieved as above average intelligence often speak quickly and are able to fit more than one sentence into every breath, a skilled speaker can deliver their speech rapidly and clearly w/o appearing arrogant or hyperactive and over medicated.
